چکیده

A probabilistic backscatter coefficient generating function (CGF) is introduced which produces realistic backscatter coefficient values for various terrain types over all incidence angles. The CGF was developed in direct support of a multilayer 3-D clutter modeling effort which successfully incorporated probabilistic clutter reflectivity characteristics and measured terrain elevation data to enhance clutter suppression and improve Signal-to-Clutter Ratio performance in radar applications'. This probabilistic clutter modeling approach is in sharp contrast to traditional 2-D modeling techniques which typically include deterministic backscatter characteristics and assume constant terrain features within regions of interest. The functional form and parametric representation of the CGF were empirically determined by comparison with published backscatter data for nine different terrain "types," including, soil and rock, shrubs, trees, short vegetation, grasses, dry snow, wet snow, road surfaces, and urban areas2. The statistical properties of the output, i.e., the mean and standard deviation, match published measured values to the number of significant figures reported. Likewise, the CGF output frequency of occurrence closely matches measured terrain data frequency of occurrence; a Chi-Square test fails to reject the method at a 0.05 level of significance, indicating a high level of confidence in the results. As developed, the CGF provides a computationally efficient means for incorporating probabilistic clutter characteristics into both simple and complex radar models by accurately reflecting the probabilistic scattering behavior associated with real terrain.

Backscatter coefficient measurements using a reference phantom to extract depth-dependent instrumentation factors.

In previous work, we demonstrated that accurate backscatter coefficient measurements are obtained with a data reduction method that explicitly accounts for experimental factors involved in recording echo data. An alternative, relative processing method for determining the backscatter coefficient and the attenuation coefficient is presented here. This method involves comparison of echo data from...

Quasi-analytical determination of noise-induced error limits in lidar retrieval of aerosol backscatter coefficient by the elastic, two-component algorithm.

The elastic, two-component algorithm is the most common inversion method for retrieving the aerosol backscatter coefficient from ground- or space-based backscatter lidar systems. A quasi-analytical formulation of the statistical error associated to the aerosol backscatter coefficient caused by the use of real, noise-corrupted lidar signals in the two-component algorithm is presented. The error ...

Interlaboratory comparison of ultrasonic backscatter coefficient measurements from 2 to 9 MHz.

OBJECTIVE As are the attenuation coefficient and sound speed, the backscatter coefficient is a fundamental ultrasonic property that has been used to characterize many tissues. Unfortunately, there is currently far less standardization for the ultrasonic backscatter measurement than for the other two, as evidenced by a previous American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM)-sponsored interl...

Potential of the incidence angle effect on the radiometric calibration of full-waveform airborne laser scanning in urban areas

Full-waveform airborne laser scanning has shown potential to better describe land cover features through the additional physical information it can provide alongside the standard geometric information. To fully utilize full-waveform for enhanced object recognition and feature extraction, it is essential to calibrate the backscattered energy of the received signal. The backscatter signal is affe...

High Frequency Backscatter Measurements of Bovine Tissues with Unfocused and Focused Transducers

In order to improve resolution of ultrasonic imaging, high frequency scanners which are employed in the range 20 MHZ to 50 MHz are needed. As a result, it is critical to obtain data on ultrasonic scattering and attenuation in this frequency range. At these high frequencies, it is not feasible to make scattering measurements with unfocused transducers; therefore focused transducers are needed. U...
